The collapsed banking needs attention so there may be occasions when the pond is closed.

There is already a lot of interest in the Summer Canal league with 22 people having already registered so don’t miss out as we start on the 5th June for the first of our 10 match programme.

Juniors can look forward to their own set of “competitions” on both Pond and Canal when all will be welcome to have a go and, if need be, get some tips.  There are six such events running throughout the summer holidays and a TASTER DAY to get them going.  This is designed for those under 16s new to or recently started the sport of coarse angling and will be coached by local NFA qualified coaches.

The canal has provided some sport for the pleasure lads who go out on better days for a couple of hours. Several nice catches of quality roach and one splendid chub catch being witnessed and photographed – see the website for a cracking 18 lb mixed bag taken by Hon Gen Sec

Tony Riley’s Pond has continued to produce many weights especially pleasing was the 4 carp plus three tench for club newcomer Richard Dawson. It has been particularly pleasing to see the number and quality of silver fish that have responded these last couple of months.

Brookfoot Lake has produced several smaller pike but the best witnessed and photographed was a 14 lb from the canal. We still expect to hear shortly that one of the big females has been caught from the lake

KEEPING  YOU UP TO DATE –feb 14th 2008

We anticipate getting the results about Tony Riley`s Pond back from the EA in the next few weeks

Preliminary fishing results, as you  will see on the Where’s Fishing section, indicate that the silver fish population  getting to the anglers baits much more frequently now that the carp have been thinned out

Current freezing of the water will slow things down considerably but get down there once the thaw sets in and enjoy.

PLEASE MAKE THE EFFORT, IT IS WELL WORTHWHILE

Mr Eddie Sandiford RIP Eddie died on the weekend 12/13th 0f January 2008; age 84 years.  We understand him to have been the longest continuous member of the Association having joined in the middle of the last century.  He served on the committee, along with his brother for a time, in the 50s, 60s and the 70s.

A war veteran of the Burma campaign he enjoyed a career post - war as a joiner but his real passion lay with his fishing.  By reputation one of the finest all round anglers the Association has ever had and as brilliant an exponent of art of river fishing to be seen anywhere in the North.

Brighouse Angling Association has lost another stalwart.

The canal has provided some sport for the pleasure lads who go out on better days for a couple of hours. Several nice catches of roach and odd chub being witnessed and photographed – see the website for a cracking 1lb 5oz specimen roach taken by one of our bailiffs.**

Tony Riley’s Pond has not produced many weights but here too there has been fish to be caught.  Some work is being done to restore collapsed banking so there may be occasions when it is closed.

I have few reports from the river but have it on good authority that a 4lb barbel has been taken below the town.

Brookfoot Lake has produced several smaller pike and I expect to hear shortly that one of the big females has been caught as January sees more pike anglers on the bank.

Other fish have been budgeted for and, like last year, we have insisted on quality before quantity but as to when they can be delivered we are in our suppliers hands.

Mr Ray Charnock RIP

Ray died on the 20th December 2007.  His contribution to the Association has been immense, working as Committee member, as Treasurer for 20 years, Match Secretary and team member, junior organiser and general ambassador.

The Brighouse Angling Association will be forever in his debt.  The tangible legacy we retain is in the Lake and Tony Riley`s Pond.  Ray`s guiding hand oversaw their development through a period of change lasting five years and some times this was a seven days a week task over and above his own business in the bakery. The current website is also testament to his dedication on taking up the challenge after the loss of it’s original creator, Dennis Noble.

We have been privileged to have known and to have worked alongside him.

Results of the Christmas match were pretty much as expected by last years winner -Steve Crossley who thought that 49 out of the 56 anglers booked on would blank!  This year it was the turn of local tackle shop owner Dave Finnegan to take the winning plaudits for a roach catch of 3lb 6oz off the much fancied basin at Elland.  The place to be was the high wall in the Market as three of the top six came from this well-favoured section and everyone caught.

Not much to choose between the rest as even the Gasworks (last years top stretch) and the Willows (this winters hotspot) failed to produce any nets worthy of the quality anglers that took part. Worst was the Pop shop where only one fish was caught but the angler wasn`t in the optional pools so one lucky man (Mr smith-yes really!)took the section money on a lucky ticket draw.  What is more he also took the raffle prize !

Thanks to Steve Mitchell for all his hard work and the team who put he match together; the Bridge at Elland fro their hospitality and our prize donations -John Naylor (butcher), Rising Sun (Caterers) and Calder Anglers Supplies.
